Wyoming School Counselor Certification Renewal and Advancement

In Wyoming, School Counselors must renew their certification every five (5) years to maintain their credentials and continue supporting students effectively (see Certification Renewal Overview). This process involves completing professional development credits through accredited courses or workshops (see Online Professional Development Options) and submitting a comprehensive application to the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB). Educators can advance their certification by meeting additional requirements and adding endorsements.

Staying informed about renewal timelines and requirements ensures that school counselors uphold high professional standards and remain equipped to address the evolving needs of their school communities. For detailed guidelines, visit the Wyoming PTSB Applications page.

Certification Renewal

Professional Development/Renewal Credits:

  • All Wyoming educators, including School Counselors, must complete five (5) Professional Development/Renewal Credits every five years. Credits can be obtained through:
    • Accredited university courses
    • PTSB-approved workshops
    • Continuing education
    • Credits earned while pursuing National Board Certification

Application Process:

  • Renewal applications (see Renewals Overview) are accepted up to six (6) months before your current license or permit expires.
  • Ensure your application packet is complete with all required documentation, including transcripts. Incomplete applications will be returned unprocessed.
  • Submit your application online via the Wyoming PTSB website or download the application from the Applications page.

Verification:

  • Verify the completed credits.
  • If credits are earned through a PTSB class or workshop, the PTSB will have a record of these credits.

Fee:

  • Review the fee requirements listed on the application form (see fee schedule). Payment can be made by check, cashier’s check, money order, or credit card.

Background Checks:

  • Renewal applications do not typically require a new background check unless explicitly stated by the PTSB.

Documentation:

A complete application packet should include:

  • The renewal application form.
  • Official transcripts or certificates verifying the completion of professional development credits.
  • Any additional documentation required for adding endorsements or verifying competencies.

Upgrading/Advancement from the Conditional Certificate

Requirements:

  • Meet all initial certification requirements that were not completed when the Conditional Certificate was issued.
  • Complete any additional coursework or professional development as required by the PTSB.

Application Process:

  • Apply for upgrading from a Conditional Certificate to a Standard Certificate.
  • Provide documentation that all requirements have been met, including transcripts and professional development credits.
  • Pay any applicable fees.

Background Checks:

  • A new background check may be required when upgrading from a Conditional Certificate to a Standard Certificate.

Tips:

  • Renew Early: Submit your application up to six (6) months before your license or permit expires to avoid delays.
  • Complete Application Packet: Ensure all required documentation and fees are included to avoid processing delays.
  • Review Requirements: Double-check the renewal requirements listed on the back of your current School Counseling Certificate to ensure compliance.
