School Counseling Master’s degree programs are required for school counselor certification, but can also open doors to various additional career opportunities. Many graduates of school counseling master’s programs will go on to become counselor educators teaching in school counseling programs themselves, mentoring students and conducting research. There are additional counselor educator opportunities in providing training and workshops in professional development organizations.
For those with interest in focusing more on the mental health side, many school counselor program graduates pursue their own businesses in private practice offering individual, group, or family counseling services. In an employee role, many graduates may seek out employment through community agencies or substance abuse treatment centers offering mental health and addiction counseling services.
