School Counselor Certification

The journey to becoming a school counselor in Georgia is marked by a rigorous certification process to ensure candidates possess the requisite skills and knowledge. This process also involves a thorough screening to guarantee the safety of students, serving as a crucial barrier that upholds a competitive job market for aspiring school counselors.

Georgia offers three distinct types of school counselor certification, each designed to address specific needs and accommodate individuals with diverse educational and professional backgrounds seeking to become certified school counselors in the state.

See Initial School Counselor Certification Requirements for how to acquire each certification listed below.

Standard Professional School Counselor Certification

Valid for 5-years, the Standard Professional School Counselor Certification is the gold standard for fully qualified applicants.

Provisional School Counselor Certification

The Provisional Certificate is initially issued for one year, pending verification of enrollment in a GaPSC-accepted educator preparation program leading to certification in School Counseling. Once enrolled, the certificate is extended for two additional years.

Non-renewable Professional School Counselor Certification

The third option is the Non-renewable Professional School Counselor Certification, granted under specific circumstances and offers a limited timeframe for individuals to serve as School Counselors in Georgia.

There are two qualification options for the Non-renewable Professional School Counselor Certification:

  • Hold a valid, professional GA certificate in another field at a level four (4) or higher and completing a masters or higher degree in any counseling area, resulting in a three-year certificate
  • Hold an expired GA Clear Renewable or Standard Professional School Counseling Certificate without meeting renewal requirements, leading to a one-year certificate
