Certification Renewal Process for School Counselors
In the state of Michigan, individuals can serve as school counselors with one of two renewable credentials:
- School Counselor License (SCL).
- Michigan Teaching Certificate with the School Counselor (NT) endorsement.
Both credentials are valid for five (5) years, with the opportunity for unlimited renewals. Renewal requests can be submitted at any point after January 1st in the year in which the credential is set to expire. Renewal Pathway 1: School Counselor License (SCL)
Renewal Period:
- The School Counselor License is valid for five (5) years with unlimited renewals. Renewal can be requested any time after January 1st of the year the credential expires.
Professional Development Hours:
- Total of 150 professional development credits within the previous five (5) years. Specifically, 25 hours of college preparation and selection, and 25 hours of career consultation, including at least 5 hours of military career consultation options.
Application Process:
- Renewal applications are completed online through the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS).
Materials Required:
- $160 Renewal Application Fee.
- Documentation of completion of the required professional development credits.
Professional Development Credits:
- College credits must be documented on an official transcript.
- District Provided Professional Development (DPPD) should be entered by approved sponsors as State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) and don’t require additional documentation.
Renewal Pathway 2: Michigan Teaching Certificate with the School Counselor (NT) Endorsement
Renewal Period:
- The Michigan Teaching Certificate with the School Counselor (NT) Endorsement is also valid for five (5) years with unlimited renewals.
Professional Development Hours:
- Similar to the SCL pathway, 150 professional development credits are required within the previous five (5) years, including specific requirements for college preparation, career consultation, and military career consultation.
Application Process:
- Renewal applications are completed online through MOECS.
Materials Required:
- $160 Renewal Application Fee.
- Documentation of completion of the required professional development credits.
Documentation:
- Same as for the SCL pathway, District Provided Professional Development (DPPD) should be entered by approved sponsors as State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) and don’t require additional documentation.
