Certification Renewal Process for Nevada School Counselors

Nevada Department of Education offers three (3) renewal pathways for licenses: standard or professional, special renewal for retirees, and renewing an expired license. Renewal can be done up to nine (9) months before the expiration date through the OPAL licensure system. Retirees with a Retiree License or fifteen (15) combined years of teaching experience in Nevada are exempt from continuing education credits. If your license has expired, you must reapply through OPAL and meet specific requirements. Requirements include registering for an online profile, completing fifteen (15) hours of professional development or equivalent training, and paying the licensure fee. A criminal background check is required for all applicants.

Standard or Professional License Renewal:

  • Register for an online profile through OPAL.
  • Complete fifteen (15) hours each calendar year of professional development or equivalent in-service training.
