A valid professional license may be renewed every seven years with the equivalent of six semester hours of credit from an accepted, regionally accredited college or university, which may include up to 90 clock hours of professional development (in-services, workshops, committee service, etc.) earned during the validity of your professional license (from the issuance date to the expiration date).
An expired professional license or certificate may be renewed with the equivalent of six semester hours of credit from an accepted, regionally accredited college or university, plus up to 90 clock hours of professional development (in-services, workshops, committee service, etc.) earned during the seven years preceding the submission of your renewal application.
Individuals with a TEE must continue to participate in a special education preparation program, demonstrate continual progress toward meeting criteria, and be employed by a Colorado school district or charter/facility school (see checklist for TEE renewal). They must complete an Emergency Authorization application for endorsements. Documented evidence of continued participation, official transcripts, verification paperwork, and confirmation of registration for exams or practicum arrangements are examples of qualifications. School counselors with a master’s degree in clinical counseling or social work must do further training. The application fee is $90, and the authorization is valid for one year from the date of issuance.
Individuals completing a special services program and hired for an internship by a Colorado school district, BOCES, or charter/facility school must have a bachelor’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited college/university, be enrolled in an approved program for special services provider preparation, and intern under the supervision of a CDE professional license-holder. The application fee is $90 in-state, and the authorization is valid for one year from the date it is issued.
Individuals renewing their initial special services (see ISS license renewal checklist)Â license in Colorado must produce a letter of justification for failing to complete an approved induction program. They require electronic copies of requested papers, as well as adequate time for third-party transcripts and a review of the application process. The application fee is $90, and the license is valid for three years from the date of issuance.
Applicants with an initial Colorado teacher, special services, principal, or administrator license may graduate with a professional license. For expired credentials, additional requirements may apply. It is necessary to provide a copy of a certificate proving completion of a specific Colorado induction program.
